Hope and Edale Valleys Circuit

Suitable for: Energetic, Off road, Inspiration

Start/Finish: Castleton/Castleton

Length: 17 miles / 27km

Description: At the junction of the White Peak and Dark Peak, this challenging circuit will take your breath away in more ways than one!

Beginning at the tourist honeypot of Castleton, warm up your muscles on the A6187 to Hope. At Hope, take the left turn into Edale and bear off right at a bend to pass Fullwood Stile Farm following the track up to Hope Cross. Shortly after the cross, descend left into Jaggers Clough (loose and steep with loads of pedestrians at weekends), ford the stream and climb steeply out to get the reward of great views and a good fast downhill track past Clough Farm. After Nether Booth, climb to Hollins cross (technical, steep), along the ridge towards Mam Tor and take the descent to Greenlands (technical, steep) and on to the last climb of the day, Chapel Gate. Then along Rushup edge, past Rowter Farm and down the Limestone way to the gate that signifies the final and highly technical (especially in the wet) descent below Peveril Castle and back into Castleton.

Map/guidebook: OS Explorer 1:25 000 series, sheet OL1, The Dark Peak map.

Best bit: The Cave Dale descent which is steep and technical (best done during the week out of season).
